The Catastrophic Hurricane's History
Melissa was a rude awakening to how quick hurricanes develop and strengthen, as well as how they effect us. Melissa made a tragic and catastrophic landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 Major (Catastrophic) Hurricane. It cause widespread extreme flooding, disturbingly high storm surge, and winds exceeding 185 MPH (Gusts up to 215 MPH). The storm claimed the lives of 19 people (subject to change) in Jamaica. Not only that, but in Haiti, the death toll has reached 30 people. After the devastating effects as a Category 5, the storm weakened to a Category 3 Major Hurricane before making landfall in Cuba, causing similar effects. Melissa is most likely to be retired, making it the only retired name of 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
