2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season - History
This season was hyper-active. There were nineteen tropical cyclones, eighteen in which had formed. This season consisted of 6 MAJOR hurricanes, which is about 3 above the average season. The season had an average damage cost of $22.8 billion. Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight never formed, but still damaged the Carolinas.
Multiple different record breaking storms that defined the severity of this season:
Tropical Cyclone Beryl (TC2) made landfall in Texas very early in this season. It caused the worst tornado outbreak causing 201 tornado warnings and 68 Tornadoes, and was the EARLIEST Category 5 Major Hurricane on record.
Tropical Cyclone Debby (TC4) is a hard to define storm. It is one of the most far-reaching storms, making a first landfall in Florida, then stopping along each state on the east coast of the U.S. Some forecasters say the storm was actually a Category 3 instead of what it really was as a Category 1. The storm prompted Flash Flood Emergencies in Florida and Pennsylvania, and caused a tornado outbreak of at least 24 Tornadoes.
Tropical Cyclone Helene (TC9) made landfall in Florida in the middle of this season. This was supposedly the worst storm, however, the worst of the damage hit North Carolina, not Florida. Yes, it caused a 20 ft Storm Surge, but the damage in North Carolina reshaped their landscape forever. This storm caused a tornado outbreak containing 35 Tornadoes. No other storm was like Helene, and it is even possible that this name may be declared retired.
Tropical Cyclone Milton (TC14) made landfall yet again, in Florida, but this time, North Carolina was safe. It hit Tampa, causing widespread damage, since this storm intensified extremely quick. This storm caused extensive flooding, high storm surge, and highly destructive winds. This was a hyper-active hurricane and was enormous in size.
It is good this hyper-active 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season is over, but it makes us wonder what is in store for the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Hopefully the oceans calm and bring good breeze.
